Catherine Jere

Associate professor in education and global development, University of East Anglia

Dr Catherine Jere is an Associate Professor in Education and Global Development at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Her research interests center on exploring how institutional and social barriers to education in developing country contexts are challenged and disrupted.

Key research areas include gender equality in and through education, with a focus on school-related gender-based violence, innovative approaches to youth literacy and learning, and the social drivers and mitigation of the impact of HIV/AIDS on education. Her geographical focus is East Africa, with particular expertise in Malawi.

She specializes in mixed-methods research designs and is keen to promote youth-centered participatory and transformative approaches to research and evaluation. She is Co-Chair of the UEA UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation.

Catherine is currently coordinating research for the GPE-KIX project Lifting Barriers: educating boys for gender equality.
