France and GPE
France is a global leader in education, recognizing it as a crucial sector for enhancing employability and security in partner countries.
France has been a longstanding partner of GPE since joining the partnership in 2005. The French Development Agency (AFD) became an accredited Grant Agent in 2013 and is now GPE’s third-largest grant agent.
To date, France has contributed more than EUR 561 million to GPE, and GPE has channeled over EUR 616 million through AFD.
In February 2018, France, alongside Senegal, hosted GPE’s Financing Conference in Dakar, where France pledged €200,000,000 for 2018-2020.
At the 2021 Financing Conference, France committed €333,000,000 to the GPE fund for 2021-2025, with a particular emphasis on girls’ education.
Beyond financial support, France plays an active role in GPE's governance structure and will soon host its European Headquarter.
France is representing, together with Belgium, the Donor 1 constituency and has recently served as chair of the Performance, Impact, and Learning Committee while also participating in the Finance and Risk Committee.
France is a very active partner at country level through acting as grant agent and coordinating agent, particularly in Africa.
