Germany and GPE

Germany is a founding member of GPE and GPE and has as such shaped strategic decisions and the allocation of funds to partner countries since 2005. As the fifth largest donor country, Germany currently contributes 50 million euros annually to GPE.

Germany has committed to contributing €270 million to GPE for the period 2027 to 2032.

At GPE’s 4th replenishment in 2021, Germany committed €330 million for 2021-2026. This pledge includes €100 million to GPE’s Girls' Education Accelerator, which Germany was instrumental in shaping. This targeted funding aims to reduce barriers to girls’ education and enable 46 million girls to attend school. It is part of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development's SHE-Support Her Education Initiative, launched in May 2021.

Germany is an active member of GPE’s Board and co-leads the donor 5 constituency, which represents the European Commission, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Germany also sits on the Finance and Risk Committee.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) operates as a GPE grant agent in Mozambique, thereby making an important contribution to quality assurance. In June 2024, Germany hosted GPE’s Board meeting in Berlin.
