Spain and GPE

Spain is a longstanding partner of GPE, having joined the partnership in 2006.

To date, Spain has contributed US$382 million the GPE fund.

In 2021, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged that Spain would contribute at least €20 million for GPE’s 4th replenishment, covering the period 2021-2025.

On September 25, 2024, Antón Leis, Director of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) announced at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York that Spain will contribute €20 million between 2024-2025 to GPE.

This brings Spain’s total contribution for the strategic period 2021-2025 to €25 million, an increase of €5 million beyond Spain's initial pledge at the Global Education Summit in 2021.

€3 million will be allocated to GPE’s Girls’ Education Accelerator and €5 million will be dedicated to GPE’s support for the West Bank and Gaza.

In a world where crises are multiplying and global challenges are increasingly intertwined, placing education at the heart of foreign policy can pave the way toward a more peaceful, resilient, and equitable world. Investing in global education is not charity. It’s statecraft. It is about preventing conflicts, promoting equality, and building resilient societies.
